MOSCOW, February 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia lost some 400,000 birds to bird flu since July 2005 and culled more than 1.3 million birds, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Tuesday.

"More than 20,000 birds were culled in the last 24 hours, and some 20,000 bird deaths were registered," the ministry's press service said, adding that no human cases had been reported.

The ministry said it had taken control of six southern Russian regions - the republics of Kabardino-Balkaria, Daghestan, Chechnya and Kalmykia, and the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories - located on bird migration routes.

According to the ministry, three bird flu outbreaks have been registered in Russia since July 2005.

The first outbreak was recorded in July-September 2005 in six regions of the Volga, Urals and Siberian Federal Districts. More than 634,000 birds were culled and about 17,000 died from bird flu.

The second outbreak hit six regions in the Central, Southern, Volga, Urals and Siberian Federal Districts in October 2005 - January 2006, when more than 8,000 birds were culled and more than 1,500 died.

More than 669,000 birds have been culled and more than 381,000 have died during the most recent outbreak that began February 3, 2006.
