NOVOSIBIRSK, February 21 (RIA Novosti, Dmitry Mikhalev) - Army barracks and non-residential premises in Siberia have been equipped with cameras as a safeguard against hazing attacks, a local commander said Tuesday.

"Cameras have been installed in soldiers' barracks and non-residential premises in 78% of units of the 41st army of the Siberian Military District," Major General Alexander Galkin said.

He said it would allow officers on duty to control everything that goes on in the military unit.

Galkin also said newly drafted privates in Siberia were serving separately from long-serving soldiers.

The security measures follow a series of recent hazing cases in the Russian army that caused a public outcry. In one case, a young soldier had to have his legs and genitals amputated after being tortured by colleagues for several hours in the Siberian city of Chelyabinsk, 1,800 miles east of Moscow. Land Forces Commander Alexei Maslov admitted that the incident was only reported 25 days later.

According to official Russian statistics, 16 servicemen died in hazing incidents last year; however, experts believe that the actual figure may be substantially higher, as official figures do not take into account suicides caused by hazing.
