Legislature accepts Daghestani leader's resignation

MAKHACHKALA, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - The People's Assembly of Daghestan in Russia's North Caucasus accepted Monday the early resignation tendered by Magomedali Magomedov, who had led the republic for 23 years.

Magomedov, 75, started his career as a school teacher and took leading positions in then-Soviet Daghestan, and was first elected Chairman of the State Council, the republic's top executive body, in 1994, reelected for a second term in 1998 and for a third term in 2002.
