TBILISI, February 15 (RIA Novosti, Marina Kvaratskhelia) - The Georgian parliament approved Wednesday a resolution outlining major changes to the peacekeeping process in one of the country's breakaway republics.

The resolution was supported by 179 out of 235 members of parliament.

Givi Targamadze, the head of the parliamentary committee on defense and security, said the new resolution on the peacekeeping mission in the self-proclaimed republic of South Ossetia stipulated five provisions.

The first provision offered a negative assessment of the implementation of obligations by peacekeepers in South Ossetia and said the activities of the Russian Federation in the region were attempts at annexation.

The second provision called for the government to review the Sochi agreements of June 24, 1992 and to begin steps to replace the current peacekeeping contingent with an effective international peacekeeping contingent.

The third provision proposed that the government, in order to avoid further destabilizing the situation in South Ossetia and to preserve peace and stability in the region, intensify its work with international organizations and partner-countries to develop a new peacekeeping format.

The fourth provision read as follows: "For the peaceful and full-scale political settlement of the conflict on the territory of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region, the government must reinvigorate its work with international organizations and partner-countries on the implementation of the peaceful conflict settlement plan approved by the OSCE foreign ministers."

The fifth provision ordered the Georgian government to provide the international community with detailed information demonstrating the failure of peacekeepers to comply with their obligations.
