Unemployment to be brought down to 7.6% in 2006 - official

MOSCOW, February (RIA Novosti) - The Ministry of Public Health and Social Development aims to bring unemployment down to 7.6% of the country's economically active population during 2006, a source in the Russian government said Wednesday.

The ministry then aims to bring unemployment down to 7.4% in 2007 and to 7.3% in 2008.

In 2000, unemployment reached 10.5% of Russia's economically active population, 9% in 2001, 8% in 2002, 8.6% in 2003, 8.3% in 2004, and 7.7% in 2005.

At a meeting Thursday, the government will consider a report on the Public Health and Social Development Ministry's performance in 2005 on and its main areas of activity from 2006 through 2008.
