Ukraine turns to veterinary watchdog in meat dispute with Russia

KIEV, January 30 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine has turned to veterinary watchdog the International Epizootic Bureau in its campaign to have a ban lifted on meat sales to Russia, the Ukrainian agrarian policy minister said Monday.

Oleksandr Baranivskyy said the ministry had sent a letter to the IEB's general director requesting his assistance in the matter. The ministries for agriculture and economics were also to write to the World Trade Organization on the subject, he said.

Russia introduced a ban on meat imports from Ukraine on January 20, accusing its neighbor of failing to meet veterinary standards. The ban would stay in effect until the Ukrainian side provided full guarantees of strict veterinary control, it said.

Baranivskyy said a Ukrainian delegation, in Moscow in an effort to solve the meat problem had so far failed to meet with Russian representatives to discuss the issue.

He said he had personally planned to hold negotiations in Moscow but cancelled his visit as the Russian side "was completely unwilling to discuss this problem."
