Moscow ready to hold ministerial talks with Ukraine on meat ban

MOSCOW, January 28 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow has confirmed its willingness to hold ministerial talks with Ukraine on the issue of a ban on Ukrainian meat, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

Ukraine had proposed holding talks between the countries' agriculture ministers to discuss the situation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that while it was in principle willing to hold a ministerial meeting on the issue, it also expected to receive details from Ukraine on veterinary monitoring of the quality of meat products being exported to Russia.

The ministry said that despite previous agreements, no such information had yet been provided.

"The Russian side is still waiting to receive this," the ministry said.

A ban on meat imports transported via Ukraine was imposed by Russia December 30, 2005. Russia also imposed restrictions on the import of pre-prepared meat products January 1, 2006 and a full ban on livestock product imports from Ukraine January 20.

Russia insists Ukraine should provide guarantees that its products meet Russia's veterinary and sanitary standards and that Ukraine sign a protocol to this effect.
