MOSCOW, January 27 (RIA Novosti) - Investigators are checking reports of alleged threats made against the family of the army conscript who was tortured during a hazing incident that left him severely disabled, a military prosecutor's office said Friday.

"Investigators are verifying information on threats to [Andrei] Sychev's family," an official said.

Marina Muffert, the soldier's sister, said on Ekho Moskvy radio station Friday that unidentified people had tried to intimidate her mother to leave the city, where her son is undergoing treatment, and offered her money.

Sychev was stationed at a tank academy near Chelyabinsk, in the Urals. Older servicemen tied him to a chair and beat him for several hours during New Year's celebrations. He remains in critical condition in the hospital after surgeons had to amputate his legs and genitals due to gangrene.
