Russian UES may reduce power supply to Finland if necessary

MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russian power giant Unified Energy System (UES) may reduce electricity supplies to Finland due to increased power consumption in Russia after a cold spell settled over the country.

Margarita Nagoga, spokeswoman for the power giant, said UES had agreed with its Finnish partners that during peak demand periods for the next five days power supplies to Finland could be reduced by 400 megawatts. UES' contract stipulates supplies of 1,300-1,400 MW.

Power demand in Moscow and across Russia has soared this week. Temperatures in the capital have fallen as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit), prompting residents to turn to electric heaters to combat the cold.
