Below is a summary of the main security-related events in the North Caucasus on December 29, 2005

* A would-be bomber was killed and two people injured in a blast in Makhachkala, the capital of the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan, after the man blew himself up 200 meters away from a mosque

* Police said a law enforcement officer had died after carelessly handling weapons in Chechnya

* Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Chechen First Deputy Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov to discuss law enforcement activity and security in the North Caucasus republic

* The Russian Prosecutor General's Office said a suspected member of a Chechen gang involved in attacking federal forces in June 2004 had been detained in the republic

* Police said an arms cache had been discovered in the Daghestani city of Buinaksk at a Jewish cemetery

* Interior Ministry officials said two suspected militants had been detained in Daghestan's Khasavyurt district

* Police said a militant had been detained in Ingushetia's Sudzhinsky district on the Kavkaz Highway
