Russia alarmed by UN forecasts for Afghan drug production

MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is alarmed by the United Nations' forecast that illegal drug production will increase in Afghanistan, a senior Foreign Ministry official said Wednesday.

Moscow continues to treat the drug threat coming from Afghanistan as extremely serious, Mikhail Kamynin said. Russian experts have studied in detail the UN Office on Drugs and Crime's report on Afghanistan, and consider its findings to be extremely alarming.

Kamynin said, "The lack of real success in the fight against the drug threat emanating from Afghanistan calls for a more serious approach on the part of the global community toward tackling this menace."

He urged measures to bring Afghanistan's agriculture onto a conventional track and to divert it from poppy production, and said effective barriers had to be put in place to halt heroin flows from the country.
