TBILISI, December 17 (RIA Novosti, Marina Kvaratskhelia) - Russia's electricity monopoly Unified Energy System is ready to join the construction of the largest hydroelectric power plant in Georgia, UES Deputy Chief Executive Mikhail Mantrov said.

"We are considering the participation in a rather serious project, the completion of the construction of the Khudoni hydroelectric power plant," Mantrov said at a session of the Russian-Georgian business council. "This project requires investments worth several hundred millions of dollars."

The 700-megawatt power plant is located on the Inguri River in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone. Its construction began in the mid-1980s but was interrupted in 1990.

According to western experts, at least $500 million are needed to complete the project. The Georgian government made many attempts to complete the plant but failed due to its location in the conflict zone.

The government plans to privatize the power plant after the conflict resolution.
