DAMASCUS, December 6 (RIA Novosti, Nadim Zuaui) - Russian-Syrian contracts for natural gas transportation and processing will fuel the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the sector, the head of a leading Russian pipeline company said Tuesday.

Following talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Stroitransgaz CEO Viktor Lorents said that by entering the Syrian market, Russian companies could also send a positive message to foreign investors about Syria's business climate.

On Monday, Stroitransgaz signed two contracts worth a total of $370 million with the Syrian Gas Company (SGC). One of the contracts envisages involvement in a project to build the 324-kilometer Syrian section of a pan-Arab natural gas pipeline. The other contract provides for the construction on the basis of a gas processing plant near the Syrian city of Palmira.

Lorents said that during Tuesday's talks, he and the Syrian president had discussed the possibility of Stroitransgaz' involvement in projects to build oil refineries and a petrochemical facility in Deir ez Zor.

Syrian Oil and Mineral Resources Minister Ibrahim Haddad said next year would see the signing of several Russian-Syrian contracts for oil exploration and production, as well as for the construction of a plant to manufacture basalt pipelines.
