Prosecutors to ease charges against Russian crew in oil theft trial in Nigeria

MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that Nigerian prosecutors would lighten the charges against 12 Russian sailors accused of smuggling crude oil.

Tuesday's court session postponed hearings until December 14, with prosecutors agreeing with the defense to lighten its statement of charges, a ministry news release said, referring to the Russian Embassy in Lagos.

The sailors, all crewmembers of the Greek-owned African Pride that was found carrying allegedly stolen oil 31 miles off Nigeria's coast in October 2003, were imprisoned in the country for nearly two years before being released on bail in September. Delays in the case have strained diplomatic relations between Russia and Nigeria.
