MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Kazakh foreign minister said Tuesday that the tightening of control on its border with Kyrgyzstan was not linked to the upcoming presidential elections in Kazakhstan.

Kasymzhomart Tokayev, who is currently in Moscow for a session of the council of foreign ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO, comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan) said the decision to tighten border control had been made by border guard authorities and was not politically motivated.

"This [decision] could have been triggered by the problem of illegal immigration or by mass rallies which are under way in Bishkek," he said.

In the past, Kazakstan expelled illegal Kyrgyz immigrants who organized rallies in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
