KIEV, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - About 50,000 people gathered Tuesday on Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) in Kiev, Ukraine's capital, to celebrate the first anniversary of the "orange revolution."

Police units have taken positions around the square and in its underground passage, which is a famous gathering point for young people, street singers and painters, and have blockaded adjacent streets.

"We expected all sorts of incidents, but it has been quiet here so far," the commander of a police unit said.

Earlier, local police arrested 30 members of the Bratstvo (Brotherhood) party, who attempted to conduct an "anti-Maidan" rally on the Kiev's European Square.
