Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and LUKoil President Vagit Alekperov also discussed the implementation of a 2005-2014 strategic partnership agreement signed by both companies in March 2005, the statement said.
"The document envisions joint projects to explore and develop oil and gas fields in the Yamalo-Nenets and Nenets autonomous districts [in Russia's arctic north], the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea, Uzbekistan, and other regions, and to develop cooperation in the transport of oil and gas condensate by sea," the statement said.
In June 2003, Gazprom and LUKoil established a joint venture on a parity basis to develop fields in the Caspian Sea together with Kazakh KazMunaiGaz.
Miller also met Wednesday with Shoei Utsuda, the head of Japanese company Mitsui & Co. Ltd.
The parties discussed joint projects to produce and sell liquefied natural gas, to establish a unified system for gas production, transportation, and supply in East Siberia and the Far East, with the possibility of exports to China and the Asia-Pacific region.
Miller and Utsuda discussed prospects of implementing the program for gas distribution on the Sakhalin island near Japan, and the possibility of Gazprom joining the Sakhalin-II project.
