MOSCOW, October 12 (RIA Novosti) -- World No. 1 Maria Sharapova moved through to the quarterfinals of Russia's premier tennis tournament the Kremlin Cup Wednesday after her opponent retired due to an injury.

Sharapova was losing 1-6 1-4 to Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany in a second-round match, when the German player sprained her ankle. After a long pause, Groenefeld returned to the court, but soon had to retire.

Sharapova will now face the winner of the match between Russian Dinara Safina and Australian Samantha Stosur.

Sharapova said it was not a real victory: "I know that I haven't won the match," she said. She added that it was the first time in her tennis career that her opponent had retired while being in a winning position.

She also said she had been nervous before the match, as she was returning to the game following an injury.

Sharapova also spoke of her plans to open a tennis school in Russia, possibly in Sochi, a Black Sea resort.
