KIEV, October 6 (RIA Novosti, Taras Burno) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said Thursday that the country had moved past the turmoil that caused him to sack the government in early September.

"The political crisis that erupted in Ukraine early this fall has been overcome," Viktor Yushchenko told the Ukraine-European Union economic forum underway in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine.

The presidential press office quoted Yushchenko as saying that his decision to dismiss the government of former Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko, who helped bring Yushchenko to power last year, had been prompted by a decline in "some economic indices." Yushchenko said the country's GDP growth slowed from 6.5% in early 2005 to 1.6% in September 2005.

The figures show the economic processes in Ukraine "reversed," Yushchenko said.

"Under the previous government, export growth rate slowed two-fold, whereas import growth tripled," he said.
