MOSCOW, October 5 (RIA Novosti) -- The Russian government is currently considering proposals from the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos on establishing two new space industry holdings.

"Our proposals on the creation of two holdings are now under the cabinet's consideration. One involves the building of communication satellites at the Applied Mechanics Research and Production Association [in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in Siberia], while the other builds on the Scientific Research Institute of Space Instrument Engineering [in Moscow]," RSA Deputy Director Nikolai Moiseev said Wednesday.

He said the two holdings would be independent from existing ones.

"Such holdings have already appeared in Russia, for example, the Khrunichev Research and Production Center and then the Progress Central Design Bureau. Furthermore, earlier this year, a decree was issued on establishing a holding at the Machine-Building Research and Production Association in the town of Reutovo [in the Moscow region]," Moiseev said.

The Applied Mechanics Research and Production Association (NPO PM) was founded in 1959 and engages in development and delivery of space complexes, equipment and components for different types of satellite systems. About 60% of Russia's orbital satellites were built at the NPO PM.

In 1946, the Scientific Research Institute of Space Instrument Engineering became one of the first missile and space industry enterprises in the country. The principal areas of its activity include the development and operation of various types of space and ground based systems.
