LONDON, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - The next Russia-European Union summit could take place in spring 2006, the Russian leader said after the summit Tuesday.

Vladimir Putin said the summit would take place somewhere in Russia, and the date would be fixed at a later date.

Putin also said Russia-European Union relations in a new environment required a new legal basis. The Russian leader said the Russian-EU partnership and cooperation agreement, which regulated the entire range of their relations, had played a key role in the development of strategic partnership.

"The agreement's first ten-year period will expire in 2007, and the EU plans to accept new members, for which the legal base should be updated to meet modern realities," Putin said.
