Russian airlines require more stringent measures against terrorism

MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Transportation Control Service called for more stringent measures to protect Russian airplanes and airports against terrorism.

Agency head Alexander Neradko told a news briefing Wednesday that Russian airport security was not adequate against the actual terrorist threat level and that it should be improved prior to next year's International Civil Aviation Organization inspections (August 28-September 6).

Authorities in Russia stepped up aviation security measures in August 2004 after two passenger jetliners bound for southwestern Russian cities were hijacked by suicide bombers in Moscow. The bomb explosions and resultant crashes killed all 90 people on board.
