MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - The spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Russia's Far East has now been contained, the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight said Tuesday.

The agency said no new outbreaks had been registered during the past week in the two Far Eastern regions hit by the epidemic - Khabarovsky and Primorsky - and quarantine would be lifted shortly from three communities in the Khabarovsk area.

According to the agency, the situation in the areas struck by bird flu earlier this month (Altai, Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, and Kurgansk) has remained unchanged since September 14. In the Chelyabinsk region, quarantine has been lifted from two communities and imposed on one other.

As of September 19, 49 communities across Russia had confirmed bird flu cases in domestic poultry and another 81 communities were still being monitored as potential outbreak sites. Quarantine has now been lifted in 24 affected regions.
