WASHINGTON, September 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will try to draw lessons from Hurricane Katrina relief, President Vladimir Putin said Friday after the talks with his U.S. counterpart, George Bush. "Hurricane Katrina allows us to see how the authorities should reorganize state services and structures responsible for disaster prevention and relief," Putin said.

Putin set the example of the Soviet Union commenting on a U.S. journalist's question that helping Katrina victims he took money from future generations.

"The USSR lived under the motto that we should think about future generations and did not care for the present," he said. "As a result, we ruined the country."

Putin thanked Bush for meeting with him despite the complicated situation in the disaster-hit areas.

"I saw that during the meeting he was thinking about these people and their problems," he added.
