MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - Ongoing reforms in the UN Security Council should not be seen as compromising the legitimacy of its decisions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said.

Current measures to ensure international security must not be compromised, he said.

Asked about the expansion of the Security Council, Kamynin said Russia, in supporting reforms in the UN, will continue to work from "the need to reach the broadest possible agreements among member states, and increase the effectiveness of each link in the UN system."

"The principle of broad agreement is particularly important in the context of resolving such serious issues as expanding the UN Security Council." Disagreement on this issue will hold back other reforms in the organization, he said.

"The plans for expansion of the Security Council will increase its credibility and effectiveness," and Russia, as a permanent member on the council, is actively involved in negotiating an agreement among member states, he said.
