Electricity chief says powerful forces behind attempted killing

ZHIGULYOVSK, (Samara region), September 9 (RIA Novosti) - The chief executive of Russia's electricity giant, Unified Energy Systems Russia, said Friday that he believed "powerful forces" were behind an attempt on his life in March.

Anatoly Chubais said he heard that some people wanted the main suspect in the incident, a former General Staff officer Colonel Vladimir Kvachkov, to become a member of parliament.

"The case is not about Mr. Kvachkov, but about other quite powerful forces that stand behind him," Chubais said. "In my view, these forces are some of the most dangerous in Russia."

Three people have been arrested since assailants opened fire on Chubais's car on March 17. Apart from Kvachkov, two former paratroopers, Alexander Naidenov and Robert Yashin, were also arrested.

All three have been charged with the attempted murder of two or more people, as well as with the illegal possession of weapons and explosives.
