MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian government approved a proposal to adopt the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) charter at a cabinet meeting Thursday.
The proposal will be sent to President Vladimir Putin for his signature.
Russia will not have to go through an application process, but it will have to inform the organization that it has accepted its charter, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
The FAO works to achieve "food security" in agriculture and fishing. The benefits to Russia of accepting the FAO's charter are clear in terms of Russia's international cooperation as a whole and for particular agricultural and fishing projects, Lavrov said.
