Portugal's coach says his team simply needs a victory

MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - Portugal will not repeat a 7:1 victory in the 2006 World Cup qualifier against Russia, Portugal's coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, told a news conference in Moscow Tuesday.

According to the Brazilian coach of the Portuguese team, such an overwhelming victory in the first match was a lucky coincidence rather than an indication of weakness in the Russian team.

"A 7:1 score happens once in a lifetime, and we are not thinking of repeating it or suffering a similar defeat [1:7] this time," Scolari said. "Our goal is to gain another three points."

He said the thought of discussing the Russian team with his compatriot, Ivo Wortmann, who coaches Dinamo Moscow, had never crossed his mind.

"I have been friends with Ivo for thirty years, and we are certainly not going to discuss soccer when we meet," he said. "We have better things to talk about."

A victory over Russia tomorrow could guarantee Portugal a ticket to the World Cup if Slovakia fails to defeat Latvia in a visiting game on the same day.
