Poland finishes registering presidential candidates

WARSAW, September 2 (RIA Novosti, Leonid Sviridov) - A total of 16 candidates will run for the presidency in Poland after the State Election Commission registered the last two candidates on Thursday.

According to opinion polls conducted by various polling centers, three candidates will be able to gain from 20% to 30% votes, including Mayor of Warsaw Lech Kaczynski, the leader of the Civic Platform (PO) Donald Tusk, and Speaker of the Sejm (parliament), Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz.

The first round of elections is scheduled for October 9. If none of the candidates achieves an outright victory, the president will be elected in a run-off between the two candidates who garnered the most votes in the first round.
