MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - Claims by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) that there has been progress in ensuring the security of the non-Albanian population in Kosovo run counter to reality, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday.

Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said, after an incident where a Serbian car had been fired upon in Kosovo, that the ministry was concerned about the latest killing of Serbs. Kamynin said this crime again showed that the situation was far from normal and confirmed that statements by Kosovo authorities on the improvement of the situation were far from reality.

"Moreover, in conditions where the results of investigations of several previously committed ethnic-related terrorist acts have not yet been made public, Kosovo-Albanian extremists feel impunity," he said.

The spokesman said: "The bloody crime happened at a time when the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Kosovo Kai Eide was preparing a positive report on international standards in Kosovo, whose conclusions would be the base for the international community's decision on the expediency of switching over to talks on the area's status."

A car carrying four Serbs was fired upon in Kosovo on August 27. Two people were killed and two wounded.
