Presidential horse race in Kazan

MOSCOW, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Presidential horse races will be held Saturday in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, celebrating its 1,000th anniversary.Russian President Vladimir Putin, some Commonwealth of Independent States leaders and Russian regions' executives will attend the event.

The horse races will be held at a new International Equestrian Complex with a total area of 89 hectares and seats for some 7,000 people whose construction cost $30 million.

Eight races will be held at the new racetrack, involving representatives from 22 Russian regions and Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.

The presidential races will involve thoroughbred horses aged from three years old. Fourteen horses, including two from Tatarstan, will take part in the main race.

The total presidential prize fund is 17,000,000 rubles ($596,491). The main prize is 5,000,000 rubles ($175,439).

The first horse races for the presidential prize took place in July 2004 at the Central Moscow Racetrack. A horse from the Krasnodar territory won then.
