TEL-AVIV, August 21 (RIA Novosti, Ratmir Orestov) - Special envoys of the Middle East quartet (Russia, the United States, UN and EU) met in Jerusalem Saturday to discuss the implementation of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan.

Alexander Kalugin, the Russian foreign ministry's envoy and ambassador-at-large, said the meeting focused on problems which occurred as the plan was being carried out.

The diplomat emphasized the problem of the Gaza Strip's communication with the rest of the world and the West Bank after Israel's withdrawal. "These are rather complicated problems, and the solution must satisfy both Israelis and Palestinians," he said.

The envoys said disengagement would be completed in accordance with the schedule.

"The disengagement process will be completed sooner or later, and then a question will occur what further steps must be taken to reanimate the road map plan of Mideastern settlement," Kalugin said. He added that this plan remained the main guideline towards the creation of an independent and viable Palestinian state.

Those attending the meeting also discussed the agenda of the session of quartet foreign ministers, which is to be held in New York in late September.
