YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, August 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Korean diaspora on Sakhalin (the Far East) marks the 60th anniversary of liberation of the island's south from Japan Saturday.

In the 1930s-40s, Japan sent over 40,000 Korean men for forced labor in Southern Sakhalin, which Japan had seized after Russia's defeat in the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905. They worked at mines and tree felling sites and were treated like slaves. Members of their families came to join them later.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk hosted a picturesque performance featuring scenes from medieval Korean life and Korean wrestling competitions. Wreaths and flowers were laid to the Glory Memorial to Soviet liberators.
