ISLAMABAD, August 14 (RIA Novosti, Yevgeny Pakhomov) - Pakistan will continue creating new missiles and developing its missile program, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Sunday.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark Pakistan's Independence Day, he said his country intended to improve its national nuclear and missile programs.

According to him, these programs are defensive. We bear responsibility to protect our independence. Today Pakistan is a nuclear power and no one will be able to put the evil eye on our country, the premier said.

Aziz added that Pakistan sought to develop friendship and cooperation with India and was ready to discuss all existing bilateral problems.

He said the Pakistani authorities would continue their fight against terrorism and radicalism.

Pakistan is today marking the 58th anniversary of its independence amid enhanced security measures to prevent possible attacks from religious extremists. Authorities have rounded up over 700 people on the eve of the celebrations.

Pakistan gained independence in 1947 after British India separated into India and Pakistan according to the religious principle. The relations between the two parts of what used to be a single country have been tense since then. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since 1947.
