ST. PETERSBURG, August 9 (RIA Novosti, Olga Vtorova) - The spread of bird flu in Siberia will end in late August, a senior official at the National Flu Center said.

"The outbreak of bird flu in Siberia will subside by the end of August when the weather conditions change," Oleg Kiselev, the director of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Influenza, said.

He also said no bird flu cases were registered among people, and few birds were infected with the virus.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) does not see the situation in Russia as critical. The H5N1 virus is not pandemic," Kiselev said.

He also said that despite favorable forecasts, a vaccine against bird flu remained crucial, as the virus might mutate and be spread between humans.

Kiselev said when created, the vaccine should first of all be administered to poultry farm workers. Customs and border guards in the Far East would also have to be vaccinated along with doctors treating bird flu patients. The vaccine is already being developed.
