MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - Nine foreign companies are vying for the rights to develop the Shtokman gas condensate field, owned by Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, and the construction of a liquefied natural gas plant.

Gazprom experts are analyzing and assessing the proposals to draw up a short-list for pre-contract negotiations.

During its 6th session, Gazprom's coordinating committee on the production and transportation of liquefied and pressurized gas discussed preparations for the implementation of the project, including the establishment of a management company to coordinate Gazprom's liquefied gas projects.

The Shtokman field is 280-360 meters deep in the center of the Barents Sea, 550 kilometers northeast of the Kola Peninsula. It holds an estimated 3,205.3 billion cubic meters of gas and 30.98 million metric tons of gas condensate.

The committee also considered building a liquefied gas plant in Ust-Lug, 110 kilometers west of St. Petersburg, and transporting pressurized natural gas to Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave in the Baltic Sea.

The first session of the coordinating committee was held in October of 2003. The committee's main objective is to develop the company's corporate strategy in this sector and optimize the operation of the company's departments.
