BEIJING, July 21 (RIA Novosti, Aleksei Efimov) - Russia is ready to assume a great deal of air transportation services before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Russian Transportation Minister Igor Levitin said Thursday.

Levitin said China has asked to increase the number of flights there on the run-up to the Olympics.

"We cannot answer this request yet since we need official requests from European and Chinese airlines, but we believe that Russia will assume a great deal of transit air services before the 2008 Olympics," Levitin said.

He said Russia and China agreed to open a Krasnoyarsk (Siberia) - Beijing air route. Canada is particularly interested in this route since it seeks to develop a transpolar air route to China, he said.

Levitin said as soon as Russia signs a relevant agreement with Canada, the countries would open a Canada-Russia-China air route.

"It will be a good transit air route," he said.
