TEHRAN, July 20 (RIA Novosti, Nikolai Terekhov) - A number of Iranian scientists and students addressed the country's President Mohammad Khatami with a request to resume uranium enrichment.

"The country has a legitimate right to the peaceful use of the atom. Therefore, we are asking for support and to protect our rights and scientific-technical achievements," the scientists wrote.

They urged their government "not to let the Europeans take their time in negotiations and not to delay the resumption of uranium enrichment."

Tehran has not yet officially reacted to the request.

In accordance with agreements, Iran suspended its uranium enrichment program and has been awaiting, for a month and a half, proposals from the European trio (the United Kingdom, France, and Germany) on solving the Iranian nuclear problem. The proposals are expected by late July.

Tehran claimed that if the proposals contradicted Iran's interests, it would lift the moratorium on uranium enrichment and continue developing peaceful nuclear technologies.
