VELIKY NOVGOROD, July 17 (RIA Novosti, Andrei Letyagin) - Readings devoted to the birthday of well-known Russian ethnographer and traveler Nikolai Miklukho-Maklai (1846-1888) will be held in the Novgorod region in Russia's northwest.

The nineteenth event of the kind, the Maklai readings will be held at the town of Okulovka, at the square where a monument to Maklai (Southeast Asian natives called him this way) is installed.

Archivists, historians and ethnographers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod and the Novgorod region are expected to participate. Olga Miklukho-Maklai, the traveler's great-grandniece, will be a guest of honor.

An exhibition will open in a local regional museum.

Miklukho-Maklai is known for ethnographic research in 1870-1880 in Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania. He also studied the life of Papuans of New Guinea's northeastern coast.
