According to the poll, conducted by the respected Levada Center, the number of those in favor of capital punishment has fallen from 79% to 65%, while opposition has risen from 17% to 25% in the past three years.
Men and people over 40 years with a secondary vocational education and a medium income (3,000-9,000 rubles per family member per month) favor capital punishment most frequently.
Women and people under 40 years of age with a higher education and an above-average income are among the opponents of capital punishment.
The poll says that the supporters of capital punishment largely live in small cities.
Interestingly, supporters of the presidential majority United Russia party are against capital punishment, while supporters of the Communist Party favor it.
The poll was conducted on June 17-20 among 1,600 respondents in 128 settlements.
