TASHKENT, July 4 (RIA Novosti, Abu-Ali Niyazmatov) - A reporter for U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was beaten up in Uzbekistan for reasons unrelated to her journalistic activity, the Uzbek Prosecutor General's Office said Monday.

Svetlana Artykova, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said that the incident "was not linked with the journalist's professional activities."

"Lobar Kainarova has light injuries," Artykova said. "She was given medical aid but refused to be hospitalized."

The police is investigating the incident, she added.

Associated Press said that Kainarova, who is four months pregnant, was attacked Friday by unidentified assailants in Gulistan, 120 km south of the capital, Tashkent.

Kainarova was beaten in the stomach, her nose was broken, and her tape recorder was stolen, AP said. She was taken to the hospital.

Kainarova had recently interviewed a local opposition activist, after which she received threats from unknown people who told her "not to mess with politics," the agency said.
