Russian defense minister wants better export control and WMD non-proliferation efforts

MOSCOW, June 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov spoke in favor of improving interdepartmental coordination on export control and the regime covering the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in Russia.

"We should improve interdepartmental coordination in this sphere, given that export control and non-proliferation are key aspects of security policy," Ivanov said opening a session of an export control commission Wednesday.

He said departments had done a great deal to improve coordination, but there was no reason for officials to rest on their laurels.

Ivanov said firms producing WMD should establish an effective control system.

"The system should not hamper effective cooperation, but the state should maintain strict control over dual-purpose goods, WMD production and delivery vehicles," the minister said.

He added it was necessary to estimate the scale of proliferation and amend the legislative base to toughen export control and prevent WMD proliferation.

"We should see whether the base is sufficient and fully corresponds to modern demands," Ivanov said.
