Lavrov hopes EU will be objective over Russian, Estonian agreement

HELSINKI, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that he hopes the EU "will take an objective position" on the ratification of the Russian-Estonian Border Treaty.

"Estonia didn't keep its word and I ask Finland to take this into account when considering this issue in the EU. I hope that the EU will take an objective position. Estonia did exactly what it asked us not to - load the border treaty with political statements," Lavrov said following his talks with his Finnish counterpart Erkki Tuomioja.

Lavrov says he fears that the EU may yield to temptation in saying that "Estonia ratified the agreement, although with some amendments, and Russia should have also ratified the agreement with its own amendments for the sake of the agreement's simple existence.

"In order to avoid such temptation, we revoked our signature under the agreement. The agreement doesn't exist," he said.

According to Lavrov, last year Russia expressed its initiative to sign the treaty with Estonia on land borders and sea delimitation, as well as the sign a declaration on basic relations between the two countries.

Estonia agreed to sign the documents and asked Russia not to add any political documents to the agreement, he said.

"We agreed with their request and simply put aside considering the political declaration," he said.

Lavrov said Estonia promised the same.

"They didn't keep their promise and we do not intend to follow any commitments," he said.
