Zeppelin road monitoring not soon in Moscow

MOSCOW, June 27 (RIA Novosti, Dina Zhiltsova) - City Hall security commission said Monday that Zeppelins and aerostatic balloons would not be used in the near future to monitor this city's traffic.

Deputy Head of the Main Interior Department Vladimir Popov said two Zeppelins and three tethered balloons were being tested and the department would have to get permission to use them. He said authorities had not yet decided where to position the aircraft.

Authorities had said that Zeppelins and balloons could fly over Moscow by May of this year, but Moscow skies remain void of the famous dirigibles and their balloon cousins.

The city hall commission suggested using zeppelins and aerostatic balloons to tackle traffic jams and monitor mass events. The interior department stressed that Zeppelins could also be used in special operations in the event of terrorist attacks.

Experts say Zeppelins could remain in flight for seven hours, unlike helicopters.

City Hall representatives said Zeppelins would be indispensable here.
