CIS inter-parliamentary group to monitor election campaign in Kyrgyzstan

MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - The CIS inter-parliamentary group for assisting Kyrgyzstan will monitor the election campaign in the former Soviet republic, a spokesman for the group said Thursday.

"Our group will monitor the election campaign in Kyrgyzstan. We will meet with a number of presidential nominees," said Alexander Torshin, also deputy speaker of the Russian Federation Council (parliament's upper house).

Members of the inter-parliamentary group will arrive in Kyrgyzstan Friday for routine visit.

The group already met with three presidential candidates during the previous visit, Torshin said.

The inter-parliamentary group maintains close links with the Kyrgyz parliament and is CIS parliaments abreast of its work, he said.

According to Torshin, the group's mission is not limited to monitoring.

"The inter-parliamentary group is also interested in analyzing inter-regional and inter-ethnic relations, possibilities of economic assistance and discussion of democratic processes in the region as a whole."

The CIS inter-parliamentary group for assisting Kyrgyzstan was set up in April 2005. It comprises Russian, Kazakh and Tajik parliament members.
