MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - The channels for transferring terrorists to the North Caucasus begin in Western Europe, said Yuri Sapunov, head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Anti-terrorist Department. "Our joint work with foreign partners has confirmed that terrorists' migration to the North Caucasus begins in Western Europe and continues via Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia," he said.
According to Sapunov, after they undergo training in international terrorist organizations in Afghanistan and Pakistan, militants move on through Iran, Turkey and Central Asia.
Sapunov expressed concern over the data on the militants, former gang members in the North Caucasus, who head for Western countries under the guise of political refugees using forged documents.
Sapunov also said the FSB was cooperating with special services from 67 countries in the fight against terrorism.
The current cooperation level makes it possible for us to conduct joint operations, he said.
