Russia to consider ratification of bilateral border agreement after Estonia's decision

MOSCOW, June 17 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian parliament will consider the ratification of the Russian-Estonian border agreement as soon as the Estonian parliament completes the ratification, chairman of the State Duma (the lower house) international affairs committee Konstantin Kosachev said on Friday.

"The State Duma will not discuss the bill on ratification until the Estonian parliament ratifies the agreement. We will preserve the succession to guarantee against unexpected decisions similar to those the Estonian parliament made on Thursday and Wednesday," Kosachev said commenting on the suspension of the ratification in Estonia.

According to the parliamentarian, in early June the Estonian political parties decided to ratify the agreement without additional statements and declarations. "However, they lacked self-control, particularly, the Union of the Fatherland and Republic parties," he added. It was "a gesture expressive of despair as both parties are losing the support of voters."

Even if Estonia postpones ratification till fall, this will not affect the functioning of the border, Kosachev said.
