MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia comes out for the Cypriote settlement on the basis of UN resolutions and agreement of the Greek and Cypriote communities, the Russian Foreign Ministry said commenting on the UN Security Council's resolution 1604 adopted on June 15.

The resolution prolongs the stay of the UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus till December 15, 2005. The document confirms all previous decisions of the UN Security Council, particularly, resolution 1251 outlining the settlement principles. "Accordingly, UN peacekeepers will be playing an important stabilizing role on the island," the ministry said.

"Russia comes out for a just, viable and overall settlement in Cyprus. It should be based on relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and voluntary agreement of the Greek and Cypriote communities," the Foreign Ministry said.

Russia will take efforts to achieve this goal at the UN and bilateral levels, the ministry added.
