BEIJING, June 15 (RIA Novosti) - New decisions on boosting the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism will be made at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Kazakh capital Astana, SCO Executive Secretary Zhang Deguang told RIA Novosti.

The SCO leaders "are to take measures and new decisions to bolster joint actions of the SCO members to maintain stability in the region, combat terrorism, separatism and extremism and promote unity and cooperation between the SCO countries in this sphere," he said.

According to Zhang Deguang, the fight against terrorism and consolidation of peace and stability in Central Asia is "a vital problem which the SCO members and leaders assign priority to."

The organization is forming "a network of strategic partnership to ensure stability and cooperation" in the Asia-Pacific region. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization develops cooperation with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The summit is to discuss and approve India, Pakistan and Iran's claims for the status of observers at the SCO, Zhang Deguang said.

"The 2004 summit in Tashkent reaffirmed that the preparatory stage of the SCO formation was completed," the executive secretary added.

According to Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing "the organization has achieved brilliant success in the four years since its formation and won worldwide recognition."

Leaders of six countries, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, signed documents on the formation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on June 15, 2001. The SCO secretariat headquarters are in Beijing.

The summit of the SCO leaders will be held in Astana on July 5, 2005.
