MOSCOW, June 15 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian, Anna Arzhanova, is now the chief of the World Underwater Federation (CMAS), set up Jacque Yves Cousteau 50 years ago. She is the president of the Russian Underwater Federation and the only female to head a sport federation in Russia, the daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta reports.

Starting from scratch and without state support only a few years ago, Russian divers have gained serious successes. They have discovered dozens of sunken ships, attained good scientific results in Russian seas, rivers and lakes. The WWII Echo quest is a specificity of Russian diving.

On Victory Day, May 9, in the Black Sea Russian divers floated wreaths of memory for sunken Soviet warships, found on the seafloor an unidentified airplane downed by Nazis.

Anna Arzhanova will be in control of an international organization, established back in 1959 and comprising 90 national federations, Russian among them. The CMAS is headquartered in Rome.
